Road Bike Rules

Finding the right road bike can be the difference between a happy, stress-free rider and one that is uncomforatable. You will want to select the frame that is right for you.  I will help you by discussing the various materials and their advantages and disadvantages. (under construction)

The Miami Man Triathlon was held on Novenber 8, 2009, at the Larry & Penny Thompson Park in Miami-Dade County.

The 3' Rule is the law in Flroida - vehicles must stay 3' clear of riders

Lemonade Diet - Monodiet / Colon Cleanser
October 29th, 2009 9:25 PM

The following photo are the ingredients of the Lemonade Diet, which is a "monodiet."

The diet consists of freshly squeezed lemon juice, grade B maple syrup and cayenne pepper, mixed to a specific proportion.

One does not eat while on the 7 to 10 day diet, and only the lemonade mix is consumed, along with water.  Benefits are colon-cleaning, loss of weight, recognition of eating habits and better overall health.

Speedway Century / Miami-Dade County
October 19th, 2009 5:03 PM

This photo taken on the north bank turn of the Miami International Speedway at the 2004 Speedway Century showing Paul Soccio and me on the first lap of the metric century (62 miles).  We had no idea that a photographer for the Everglades Bike Club was in the rafters taking photos.  This is one of my favorite shots, as the photographer had a wide angle lens and has a full depth of field.

Dave Moulton Frame 608 of 3,000 - Fuso
October 15th, 2009 12:15 AM

In 1985 I purchased a FUSO frame directly from frame builder Dave Moulton.  Dave moved from England to California to compete with the world's major bicycle frame builders of the time. His custom quality frames were built in his shop located in San Diego County.

Below are some photos of the frame and components.  This was truly an international bike; the frame was from San Diego, CA, however, the other components are from all over the world.  The "groupo" is early Shimano, Dura Ace, a few years after the "shifting index system" (SIS) came out.  I love the black enamel finish on the rear derailleur.   The hubs are Campagnolo, and the rims are an early Mavic design (heavy duty anodized rims).

The FUSO frames Dave built from 1984 to 1993 were numbered on the bottom bracket of the frame in the sequence he built them. I rode this red and grey FUSO bike number 608 of 3,000 for many years in Miami-Dade, FL. The bike was assembled around 1985 by John Dacey of Business Cycles in Miami.  The frame is very similar to another FUSO bike (No. 4) shown in a photo gallery at Dave Moulton's photo gallery.

My main routes were to Homestead and Key Biscayne, FL. However, I used this bike in the Tecate to Ensenada ride, and sent is UPS from Miami to San Diego.  Bikers used the old fashioned toe clips in those days. This bike originally had Dura Ace pedals (cage type) with adjustable, leather straps.

Other components include a rear sprocket (cluster) that is threaded.  The road bike came with a matching red pump that fit under the top tube.  The bike weighs approximately 21 pounds and the frame is a steel alloy known as chromoly.

South Carolina at 4.54.

Texas, with more residents than Florida, had 48 cyclist deaths for a fatality rate of 2.01.

Matty Reed of Boulder Wins the Miami International Triathlon MIT
March 17th, 2009 1:10 AM

Matty Reed of Boulder Colorado and New Zealand won the Miami International Triathlon on Sunday, March 15, 2009.  Reed beat National Champion Andy Potts by only two seconds in a duel to the finish.  See race results by clicking here!

The day began in the dark, with the athletes making last second adjustments to their time trial bicycles in the "transition area."

The race begins in the morning light with glow sticks in the water for the swimmers on the one-mile triangular course.  The venue is the Miami Marine Stadium.

The Professional Division racers enter the transition area and are have changed into biking gear in less than one minute.  Mounting the bike is not allowed in the transition area and competitors run barefoot with their cleats attached to the bike's pedals. The bike portion of the MIT is 40 kilometers and two loops of Key Biscayne including four climbs of the William Powell Bridge and a portion of Crandon Park and Virginia Key.

The 10K run looped around the Miami Marine Stadium.  A portion of the run was on a dirt path. A chip located on the athlete's ankle allows for electronic timing.  Below a local runner sprints to the finish of the MIT triathlon.  The running course loops around the north side of the island and is seen in the background.

Below see overall winner Matty Reed with his Fugi D-6 time trial bike.

Shimano Introduces Dura Ace Di2 7970 at Tour of California
March 1st, 2009 10:43 PM

Shimano's Electronic Dura Ace or Di2

At the Tour of California in February 2008, Shimano introduced the new Dura Ace Di2, 7970 gear system.  This battery powered derailleur promises ease in gear shifting by touching electronic switches.  See the review on the Di2.

Highlights of Di2:

  • 30% faster than manual shifting
  • The harder the pedal, the smoother the shift.
  • It is "absolutely mind boggling"
  • 70 grams heavier than the typical Dura Ace.
  • $4,000 for complete group
  • Shimano Electronic Dura Ace or Di2
  • 1 click is one gear
  • It shifts as fast as you can move you finger
  • The front derailluer will "blow your mind"
  • It houses a small computer
  • Chain rub is non existent
  • 500 to 1,000 miles on a charge
  • a warning light will flash when it needs a charge
  • shifting smoothly no matter what power output
  • all weather durability

I have been using Shimano Dura Ace since the early 1980's when the SIS or "shifting index system" came out.   I am really excited to try this new Dura Ace Di2 system!

Is it time to opt out of the culture of speed?
5/21/2012 2:00 AM

All over the United States and indeed the world, people are riding bicycles. Forget about saving the planet, that is not the reason; it is a satisfying and civilized way to travel. Faster and more efficient than walking, and for not much more energy input; compared to driving a person is burning calories rather than gasoline.

A person ri...Read More
